Our People

With 35 horses in work, it takes a dedicated team of professionals to ensure the smooth running and continued success as expected by our owners. Below are details of the prime personalities that make up Lewis Racing:

Mark Lewis
Mark spent 2 years as a stallion handler at Stockwell Stud in Victoria before he was given an opportunity to gain invaluable experience at Kilshelan Stud in Ireland. Mark spent 6 months at the Irish branch of Coolmore Stud when he returned to Adelaide as a stablehand for David Balfour. After stints in Singapore and with Ken Sweeney, Mark was granted his Trainers License in 1994.

As head trainer of Lewis Racing, Mark has been responsible for the growth from a few horses in 1995 to now consistently having more than 30 horses in work divided between the Morphettville and Ballarat facilities.

Mark holds the honour of being one on the youngest trainers to train a winner of a black-type race when, at 25, the ill-fated Aspaade won the 1997, Listed Fulham Park Plate. Mark had his first taste of Group success with winning the 1999, Group 3 Christmas Handicap with Aviate.

Damien Holland
Damien needs little introduction to South Australian racing enthusiasts, as he is widely considered one of the most respected horseman in the country.

In his early days as a jockey, Damien was indentured to the legendary Colin Hayes at Lindsay Park Stud, which saw Damien outride both his country and metropolitan apprentice claims. Riding horses like Better Loosen Up, Almaarad and Kings High gave Damien a grounding of a successful senior jockey career.

Damien’s input into Lewis Racing is not just about raceday – he is an integral part of the continued training program which offers owners the best possible opportunity for their horse to succeed.

Bill Lewis
Bill brings a wealth of broad experience, knowledge and expertise to Lewis Racing. Close on 30 years intimate involvement in the racing industry has well prepared Bill as an influential member of Lewis Racing. Apart from being a successful owner and breeder for over 20 years, Bill has contributed to the industry through his service as a SAJC committeeman which saw him Chair the racing sub-committee and represent the industry on the Racecourse development. The South Australian Racing industry is indebted to Bill for his long involvement with Country racing, which includes his Chairmanship of the S.A. Country Racing Association and he was the inaugural Chairman of the Australian Provincial and Country Racing Conference.

Denise Lewis
Denise is the administration manager of Lewis Racing. Crucial to any business is the quality and dedication of the administrative people. In the case of Lewis Racing, Denise ensures that Mark, Damien, Bill and the rest of the racing team can devote their time to producing winners! Her long involvement in the racing industry includes her 12 year tenure as Secretary of the Mindarie-Halidon Racing Club.
